National City is one of the oldest cities in San Diego County, and it shows in the housing. There are Victorian-era homes near Heritage Square, early twentieth century cottages through the older blocks, and a lot of postwar building on top of that. It is a genuinely old housing stock by Southern California standards.

Old houses mean the laundry hookup was almost always added long after the house was built. The vent got routed through whatever path was available at the time, by whoever was doing the work, to whatever standard applied then. I approach these homes carefully for that reason — I want to see where the duct actually goes before I put anything down it, because in a house this age I cannot assume it runs where a modern home's would.
